Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Many children have anxiety before and during dental examinations.  Often soft voice control and non-threatening movements and touching of the child on the part of the dentist are sufficient to reduce the child’s anxiety.

For those children whose anxiety is not reduced by such techniques, Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.

For anxiety and distress during dental procedures, the use of nitrous oxide and oxygen (laughing gas) is usually very helpful either by itself or in combination with other anti- anxiety or sedation drugs.  In addition, it also promotes moderate reduction in pain sensation.  Nitrous oxide is a very safe behavior management technique to help a child through a difficult experience.
